Wingate wins 2007 SAC
Athletic Excellence Award
Rock Hill, S.C.----The
Wingate University Bulldogs won the 2007-08 South Atlantic Conference
Athletic Excellence Award,
league officials announced recently. The Bulldogs take the title for the
second year in a row. Wingate won four conference
regular season titles during the 2007-08 academic year.
The SAC Athletic Excellence Award is presented annually to the member
athletic department that earns the highest overall finish
based on final regular season standings in each of the 14
conference-sponsored sports. Points are based on final tournament
standings in the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country,
men’s golf and women’s golf. The trophy is presented
at the SAC Annual Business Meeting at the conclusion of each year.
Wingate edged out Tusculum College by a half point for the crown. The TC
Pioneers made a late charge in the
spring, giving
the league the closest point
race in conference history.
The Bulldogs won conference championships in volleyball, women’s cross
country, men’s basketball and women’s golf and
earned 75 points during the school year.
Wingate had a seven-point lead over Tusculum heading into the spring
season. The Pioneers picked up 34 points in the spring
to
finish with 74.5 points. They won a conference title in men’s tennis and
finished second in women’s golf and women’s
tennis to
narrow the gap. Tusculum also won conference championships in women’s
basketball and men’s soccer.
Three-time champion Carson-Newman College finished third with 69 points. The Eagles won conference championships
in
football, softball and women’s tennis. C-N finished second in men’s golf
and baseball.
Newberry College finished fourth
with 63.5 points. The Indians won the
men’s golf conference championship and tied for
second in women’s soccer.
Catawba College was fifth with 61.5 points. The Catawba Indians were
regular-season champions in football and baseball.
Lenoir-Rhyne College was sixth with 61 points. The Bears were league
champions in men’s basketball and softball and finished
second in women’s cross country.
Lincoln Memorial University received 49 points. The Railsplitters took
home championships in men’s and women’s soccer and
came in second in men’s cross country.
Mars Hill College rounds out the standings with 47.5 points. The Lions
were
conference champion in men’s cross country and
finished second in men’s tennis.
