2007-08 Men's Swimming Season Outlook

The 2006-2007 season for Wingate Men’s Swimming was a much improved and successful one.  In only the second year in the history of the team, the Bulldogs fell just 22 points shy of winning the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship to three time defending champions Washington and Lee. With the return of the entire 06-07 roster, the Bulldogs look to the incoming class to provide strength and depth, and to help the Bulldogs charge to the top of the conference.

The team will be lead by junior captains Matthew Campbell and Stephen Kesler.  The Bulldogs will also look to the five returning Division II NCAA All-Americans Gustavo Chagas, Kyle Corcoran, Mason Norman, Brian Parks, and Sergey Vlashchenko to lead the team to bigger and better results on the national level.

Five-time All-American and National Champion in the 200 Free, sophomore Gustavo Chagas will lead the men along side sophomore All-American Mason Norman in the freestyle events.  They will be joined by sophomores Daniel DeFrancisco and Caleb Marsh as well as freshman Daniel Hoagland.

Corcoran will lead the team once again in the IM events. Joining him this year will be sophomore Kevin Hennessy who will play a large part in the breastroke events as well.

Dugan, the defending conference champion in the 1000 and 1650 Free, will be tested by junior transfer Blake Wright as well as freshmen Jeremy Eaves and Issac Cole.  Cole will be one of the Bulldogs most versatile swimmers.  Joining them in the distance events will be junior Bailey Noel, as freshman Lucas Willers will handle the middle distance freestyle events.

The Bulldogs will look to strengthen their stroke events. All-American Brian Parks will once again lead the backstroke events along side Kesler. Vlashchenko will guide the Bulldogs in the breastroke events but will be challenged this year by junior transfer Patrick Blom. Joining them in breastroke will be junior Robbie Alexander, sophomore newcomer RJ Voetsch, and freshman Greg Bales. Finally, the butterfly events will be lead by junior Ben Schoenbachler, sophomores Carlos Jones and Scott Stephens, also with freshman Drew Esposito.

The men’s season kicks off on Saturday, October 27 with a home meet against Davidson College and Howard University.  The Bulldogs will face off this year against some tough Division I schools such as UNC Wilmington and East Carolina.  Coach Kirk Sanocki believes that with the depth added to the team from the incoming class, this year could potentially be the most successful team in the short history of the Bulldogs. The Bulldog men look this year to rise to the challenge at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference with an eye on the crown.
