2006-07 Women's
Swimming Season Outlook
Coming out of a challenging
but successful and impressive 2006-2007 season, the
Bulldogs look forward to this year with hopes to
re-capture the Bluegrass Mountain Conference
Championship. Last season, Wingate placed second at the
conference meet with seven All-Conference swimmers out
of 10 women total. Along the way, the Bulldogs set new
conference and team records, and qualified five women
for NCAA Division II Nationals. The Bulldogs have had a
five year stretch of winning the conference championship
or finishing secon, winning back-to-back championships
in 2004 and 2005.
Last year the team graduated
three All-Americans including Captain Kristin Newman,
Laura Gold, and Tiffany Sochurek, as well as two
outstanding teammates Julie Gundersen and Bridget
Melvin. The Bulldogs will now look to senior Rebekah
Moody for leadership and performance.
As an All-American in the
200 medley relay, Moody will lead the team once again as
Co-Captain in her senior year. She will take on the
butterfly and I.M. events and will look to be a major
contributing factor in regaining the conference champion
title she helped earn in 2005. Also contributing to the
butterfly as well as freestyle events will be sophomore
and four-time All-American Lara Golesorkhi and
Junior Anya Orzechowska.
Holding team records in the
100 and 200, senior Maria Vlashchenko will once
again lead the Bulldogs in the breastroke Events.
Vlashchenko is a five-time All-American, and will be
essential in the success of the Bulldogs this season.
Returning sophomore swimmers
Rebecca Gerbert and Samantha Vencl
increase the depth of the team. Gerbert will mainly swim
the sprint freestyle events while Vencl will concentrate
on the backstroke and I.M events.
This year the Bulldogs have
the largest incoming freshmen class of their six year
history. Freshmen Kelsey Trabue, Jordan East,
Kelly Crossen, and Sarah Erickson will
look to strengthen the Bulldog’s core in the distance
events.
Looking to reinforce the
backstroke and other stroke events this year will be
freshmen Nicole Moody, Henni Coetzer, and
Anna Rogers. Larisa Gaba will be looked to
work along side of Moody and Vencl in the IM events.
Finally two members of the incoming class, Katie
Bayag and Cheryl Vaccaro, will swim mainly
the sprint freestyle events as well as stroke events.
The women’s season this year
kicks off on Saturday, October 27 with a home meet
against Davidson College and Howard University. This
year the Bulldogs will face off against some tough
Division I schools such as UNC Wilmington and East
Carolina. Coach Kirk Sanocki believes that this year
could potentially be the most successful season in the
history of the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs practice and compete in the six-lane, 25-yard
Cannon Athletic Complex Natatorium. The swimming facility is utilized for
athletic events, lesson, classes and recreation. The natatorium also houses
the office of aquatics director and head women's swimming coach
Kirk
Sanocki.
